Sanchi Stupa, located in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is one of the most significant and well-preserved Buddhist monuments in India. The stupa, built during the Mauryan period in the 3rd century BCE, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to the architectural and artistic achievements of ancient India. History of Sanchi Stupa:
Sanchi Stupa was commissioned by Emperor Ashoka during his reign in the 3rd century BCE as a symbol of his conversion to Buddhism. The stupa was built on top of an existing hill and was intended to enshrine the relics of the Buddha. Over time, the stupa was expanded and renovated by successive rulers, including the Satavahanas, the Guptas, and the Sungas, who added elaborate gateways, monasteries, and other structures to the site.
Design and Symbolism:
Sanchi Stupa is a hemispherical structure with a central chamber, or anda, containing the relics of the Buddha. The stupa is surrounded by a circular terrace, or medhi, which is decorated with a series of stone railing and balustrades. The stone railings, which encircle the medhi, are decorated with scenes from the life of the Buddha and other Buddhist deities.
The stupa is also adorned with four gateways, or toranas, which are decorated with intricate carvings and sculptures. Each gateway represents a different stage in the life of the Buddha, from his birth to his enlightenment and his final sermon. The carvings on the gateways depict scenes from the Jatakas, or tales of the Buddha’s previous lives, as well as scenes from the life of the Buddha himself.
