Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

India is embracing a sustainable future with unwavering determination, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for self-reliance in energy production takes a momentous step forward. The launch of hydrogen fuel cell buses, a key component of the government’s green energy strategy, symbolizes a significant milestone in India’s quest for cleaner and greener transportation.

Prime Minister’s Vision

Addressing the nation from the historic Red Fort in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a groundbreaking commitment to clean energy. He highlighted the pivotal role of green hydrogen, electric mobility, and a gas-based economy in India’s path to self-reliance in energy production. This visionary approach sets India on a trajectory to lead the world in the transition to clean energy.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses: A Game-Changer

Flagging off the first hydrogen fuel cell bus at Kartavya Path, New Delhi, Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, emphasized the significance of this innovative technology. The fuel cell harnesses hydrogen and air to generate electricity to power the bus, with the only by-product being water. This eco-friendly mode of transportation presents a stark contrast to conventional diesel and petrol-powered buses, as it boasts three times the energy density and emits zero harmful emissions. Furthermore, hydrogen fuel cell buses can fully charge within minutes, offering a practical solution for urban mobility.

India’s Role in Global Energy Transformation

Shri Hardeep Singh Puri underscored the Government’s ambitious plans to make emerging fuels like hydrogen and biofuels account for 25% of global incremental energy demand growth over the next two decades. With one of the world’s largest synchronous grids and a commitment to becoming a global champion in hydrogen production and exports, India is poised to emerge as the hub for green hydrogen.

Collaboration for a Sustainable Future

The launch of the hydrogen fuel cell buses signifies a collaborative effort between the Government and industry. Shri Hardeep Singh Puri praised the partnership between IndianOil and Tata Motors, which has led to the development of indigenous solutions for fuel cells and hydrogen infrastructure in the country. The success of this initiative has the potential to transform India from a net importer of fossil energy into a net exporter of clean hydrogen energy.

The Green Hydrogen Mission

Shri Rameswar Teli highlighted the Green Hydrogen Mission’s role in establishing a green hydrogen ecosystem in India, a critical step towards achieving a carbon-free economy and mitigating climate change. This initiative reflects India’s commitment to being a cleaner and greener nation.

Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Tomorrow

The launch of hydrogen fuel cell buses represents a pivotal moment in India’s journey towards sustainable and zero-emission mobility. As the nation moves away from conventional fuels and embraces new green technologies, it marks a significant step in achieving Net-Zero emissions by 2070.

Under this program, 15 fuel cell buses will ply specified routes in the Delhi NCR Region, collecting crucial performance data under Indian operating conditions. This initiative sets the stage for India’s green hydrogen revolution, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to a cleaner, greener, and self-reliant energy future.
