Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) continues its commitment to fostering interest and expertise in space science and technology through the launch of the Space Science and Technology Awareness Training (START) programme. In collaboration with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), ISRO aims to provide undergraduate and postgraduate students with a comprehensive understanding of space-related disciplines.

The START programme, slated for April-May 2024, targets students pursuing physical sciences and technology courses across educational institutes, universities, and colleges in India. It seeks to introduce participants to diverse areas of space science and technology, including planetary exploration, astronomy, heliophysics, atmospheric science, and microgravity research.

The primary objective of START is to ignite curiosity and attract young minds to the captivating realms of space exploration and technology. The training modules will cover introductory topics in various verticals of space science and technology, supplemented by sessions on India’s space exploration initiatives and research opportunities.

Eligible candidates, comprising postgraduate students and final-year undergraduate students in physical sciences and technology disciplines, can participate in the programme. To ensure active engagement, participants must maintain a minimum attendance of 70% in live online sessions to qualify for the online examination.

Successful completion of the examination, with a minimum of 50% marks, will earn participants merit certificates from ISRO, further enhancing their credentials in the field of space science and technology. Additionally, top performers will receive special recognition from ISRO, incentivizing excellence in space-related studies.

Educational institutions interested in hosting the online training programme are encouraged to register their institutes through the ISRO E-CLASS platform. The deadline for online registration of Expression of Interest (EOI) is April 2, 2024. Selected institutes will serve as nodal centers for the dissemination of START sessions, providing essential infrastructure and logistical support for participants.

With START, ISRO envisions a future where young minds are inspired to explore the frontiers of space, contributing to India’s burgeoning space research and technology landscape. Through collaborative efforts and innovative training initiatives, ISRO continues to nurture the next generation of space scientists and technologists, ensuring a vibrant ecosystem for space exploration and discovery.
