The British government’s commitment to promoting physical activity and enhancing community well-being receives a significant boost as hundreds of swimming pools and leisure centers across England receive government investment to improve their energy efficiency. This latest round of funding, aimed at ensuring the financial sustainability of these vital community facilities, supports measures such as funding for new heating systems, solar panels, better insulation, and other energy-saving interventions.

Swimming is widely acknowledged as a beneficial activity for people of all ages, offering numerous physical and mental health benefits. The investment in the energy efficiency of swimming pools and leisure centers not only ensures the sustainability of these facilities but also protects the more than 58 million visits they receive annually, contributing to the overall health of the nation.

With increasing energy costs posing financial challenges for many facilities, the government’s support plays a crucial role in keeping the doors of local pools and leisure centers open for the communities they serve. The latest funding, totaling £80 million, benefits 442 swimming pools across 367 local authorities, with 96% of applicants successfully securing government and Sport England funding.

Sports Minister Stuart Andrew emphasizes the government’s commitment to getting millions more people active by 2030 and acknowledges the financial struggles faced by some pools due to increased energy costs. The additional £60 million of support will enable hundreds of swimming pools to lower their operating costs in the long run, ensuring they continue to provide essential services for communities nationwide.

Examples of funded projects include the refurbishment of entrance areas, installation of new air-handling units, and adoption of energy-efficient technologies such as solar panels and LED lighting. Successful applicants are funded to make renovations aimed at reducing energy consumption, with interventions including insulation, pool covers, and energy-efficient lighting.

Former Team GB Swimmer Michael Gunning highlights the importance of swimming pools as community hubs, offering opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to access aquatics. He emphasizes the life-saving impact of swimming pools, whether through learning essential skills, family recreation, or improving physical and mental health.

Sport England Executive Director for Place Lisa Dodd-Mayne underscores the vital role of swimming pools and leisure centers in promoting physical activity and community well-being. She applauds the government’s support in helping these facilities navigate financial challenges and improve their energy efficiency for future generations to enjoy.

The government’s investment in swimming pools aligns with its broader sport strategy, aiming to increase physical activity levels among adults and young people by 2030. This support forms part of a record investment of almost £400 million in grassroots facilities, demonstrating the government’s commitment to promoting physical activity and enhancing community access to sports facilities.
