The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has taken a significant step towards facilitating taxpayers by enabling them to file their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2024-25 (relevant to Financial Year 2023-24) from April 1st, 2024, onwards. The e-filing portal offers seamless filing for commonly used ITR functionalities such as ITR-1, ITR-2, and ITR-4, favored by taxpayers.

Companies are also set to benefit as they can file their ITR through ITR-6 starting from April 1st onwards. To streamline the process, CBDT notified the ITR forms early, with ITRs 1 and 4 being notified on December 22nd, 2023, ITR-6 on January 24th, 2024, and ITR-2 on January 31st, 2024.

Moreover, to assist e-Return Intermediaries (ERIs), the JSON Schema for ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-4, and ITR-6 along with the Schema of Tax Audit Reports have been made available for A.Y. 2024-25. These can be accessed under the downloads section of the e-filing portal.

With the e-filing portal offering the capability to file ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-4, and ITR-6 for A.Y. 2024-2025 from April 1st, 2024, approximately 23,000 ITRs have already been filed. The facility to file ITRs 3, 5, and 7 will also be provided shortly.

This initiative marks a significant milestone as the Income Tax department allows taxpayers to file their returns on the very first day of the new financial year, signifying a commitment to ease of compliance and seamless taxpayer services.
