Despite financial difficulties, Thakur was a diligent student and excelled in his studies. He earned a degree in law from Patna University and later went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Political Science.

Jannayak Karpoori Thakur’s political career began in the 1950s when he joined the Indian National Congress. In 1957, he was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly after quickly rising through the ranks. Thakur was known for his progressive views and his commitment to social justice. He fought for the rights of marginalized communities and was a vocal opponent of the caste system and other forms of discrimination.
In 1967, Thakur joined the Samyukta Socialist Party, which was led by Ram Manohar Lohia. He became one of the party’s most prominent leaders and was elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly several times. Thakur also served as the Chief Minister of Bihar from 1970 to 1971. During his tenure, he implemented several reforms aimed at improving the lives of the poor and marginalized.
