Prime Minister Narendra Modi pays homage to the late former Prime Minister Chandra Shekhar on his birth anniversary, acknowledging his exemplary leadership and significant contributions to Indian politics.
Chandra Shekhar, affectionately known as Jananayak, served as the 8th Prime Minister of India from November 1990 to June 1991. Rising from humble beginnings, he established himself as a prominent grassroots leader, embodying the spirit of service to the poor and marginalized.
PM Modi highlights Shekhar’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding democratic ideals, particularly during the period of national emergency. Shekhar’s courageous stance against authoritarianism and his advocacy for the rights of the downtrodden remain etched in the collective memory of the nation.
During his tenure, Shekhar faced formidable challenges, including a minority government and economic crises. Despite these hurdles, he navigated with resilience and resolve, earning admiration for his leadership during testing times.
The Prime Minister also acknowledges Shekhar’s role in fostering diplomatic relations, particularly his decision to allow US military planes to refuel in Indian airports during the Gulf War. This gesture strengthened India’s international standing and underscored Shekhar’s pragmatism in foreign policy.
