Vijay Diwas, observed on December 16 every year, stands as a testament to the valor and triumph of the Indian armed forces over Pakistan in the 1971 war. This historic day holds profound significance, marking the creation of Bangladesh from the ashes of East Pakistan. As we delve into the annals of history, Vijay Diwas emerges as a symbol of resilience and sacrifice.
Historical Background
The genesis of the 1971 war lies in the atrocities committed by the oppressive Pakistani military regime, led by General Yahya Khan, against the people of East Pakistan. The conflict escalated when the Awami League, led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, emerged victorious in the 1970 elections. In response, the Pakistani military used brute force to manipulate the results, triggering a mass exodus from East Pakistan.
India’s Intervention
In the face of this humanitarian crisis, India, under the leadership of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, opened its doors to refugees fleeing from the other side of the border. The situation took a dramatic turn on December 3, 1971, when Pakistan launched air strikes on 11 Indian airbases. In response to this aggression, Indira Gandhi instructed India’s Army Chief, General Sam Manekshaw, to initiate a full-scale war against Pakistan.
Operation Trident and Naval Victory
To support the cause of Bangladesh’s independence, India executed ‘Operation Trident,’ a strategic move led by the Indian Navy. The operation aimed to target the Karachi Port, a crucial lifeline for Pakistan. Over 13 days of intense conflict, India showcased unparalleled military prowess, culminating in a resounding victory.
Surrender of Pakistan
The turning point came when General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi of Pakistan signed the Instrument of Surrender on December 16, 1971, surrendering 93,000 Pakistani soldiers. This historic event not only marked the end of the conflict but also paved the way for the birth of Bangladesh.
