As India celebrates its 75th Republic Day, Prime Minister Modi extends warm wishes, embracing the spirit of unity with a resounding “Jai Hind!” This significant day marks the adoption of the Indian Constitution on January 26, 1950, signifying the nation’s shift from dominion status to a republic, gaining independence from the British Raj.
Reflecting on the historical significance, Republic Day holds a special place in the hearts of Indians. It was on January 26, 1930, that the Declaration of Indian Independence was proclaimed by the Indian National Congress, setting the stage for the eventual freedom from British Rule.
The history of Republic Day intertwines with India’s journey to independence. On August 15, 1947, India achieved freedom from the British Raj through the Indian Independence Act of 1947. The country, under the constitutional monarchy of George VI, operated without a permanent constitution, relying on the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935.
The pivotal moment arrived on January 26, 1950, as the Constituent Assembly, led by Dr. B R Ambedkar, adopted the Constitution after 166 days of intense deliberation. The Republic Day not only symbolizes freedom but also the enforcement of the constitution, shaping India’s democratic identity.
In his foresighted address on November 25, 1949, Dr. Ambedkar highlighted the contradictions between political equality and social-economic inequality. He emphasized the urgency to address these contradictions to safeguard political democracy.
As the 75th Republic Day unfolds, India stands at a juncture to reflect on its journey, acknowledging achievements and addressing challenges. PM Modi’s wishes echo the commitment to a united, equal, and prosperous India. The Republic Day is not just a celebration of historical milestones but a call to action to ensure a future where every citizen enjoys equality in all aspects of life.
