History of Kamakhya Temple
The history of the Kamakhya Temple dates back to the 8th century AD when it was originally built by the Koch dynasty. The temple was later destroyed by the Mughals in the 16th century and was rebuilt by the Ahom dynasty in the 17th century.
Over the years, the temple has undergone several renovations and additions, including the construction of a new sanctum sanctorum in the 17th century and the addition of new halls and gates in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Significance of Kamakhya Temple
The Kamakhya Temple is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it is one of the oldest and most revered Hindu temples in India and is considered one of the four major shrines dedicated to the goddess Shakti. Secondly, it is believed that the temple was built on the site where the womb and genitals of the goddess Sati fell after she was dismembered by Lord Vishnu.
Finally, the temple is also considered to be one of the Shakti Peethas, which are shrines dedicated to the worship of the goddess Shakti and are considered to be very powerful and auspicious places of worship.
Features of Kamakhya Temple
The Kamakhya Temple is a large complex that covers an area of approximately 10 acres. The main temple building is a four-storied structure that is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures.
The temple also features several smaller shrines dedicated to other deities, including Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya, and Lord Shiva.
One of the most unique features of the Kamakhya Temple is its annual Ambubachi Mela, which is a four-day festival that is held in June/July each year and attracts thousands of devotees from all over India. During this festival, the goddess Kamakhya is believed to undergo her annual menstruation, and the temple is closed for three days.
Another notable feature of the Kamakhya Temple is its central sanctum sanctorum, which is considered to be one of the most sacred and powerful places of worship in India.
